Required Training for the Prevention of
Clergy Misconduct
Our new policy and procedures document on Clergy
Sexual Misconduct passed at the 2011 Regional Assembly requires that:
“It shall be the policy of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in
Georgia to REQUIRE training in the prevention of clergy sexual
misconduct for all ordained and commissioned clergy seeking to obtain or
maintain ministerial standing.
All clergy – ordained, licensed or commissioned –
shall complete a standard training program consisting of a minimum of
one (1) full day, as outlined by the Commission on Ministry.”
The policy further states, “All clergy will be
required to complete the standard training as outlined by the Commission
on Ministry at least once every five (5) years.”
“Retired clergy not serving in interim or pastoral
roles are exempted from the requirement to complete the course every 5
years in order to maintain standing.”
Clergy who have had Boundary Training within the last
five years can add five years to the year in which they took the
training to find the year they must next take the training. If you are
not sure when you took the training call Karen Frank-Plumlee.
If you have not yet taken Boundary Training, you have
until 2016 to comply with the new requirement. I urge you to take the
training as soon as possible. Many of the elements in the training will
help you protect yourself against false accusations. It will also help
you in establishing policies and practices to protect the children and
other members of your congregation.
